Hey guys! Jesse here back with another video. Today we’re gonna be talking Instagram hashtags and how you can step up your hashtag strategy. Let’s go.
Before we get into where to research hashtags, firstly you have to understand how hashtags work best on Instagram. I won’t go too in depth of how hashtags work, but the basic idea is that you have to have an array of different caliber hashtags. You should have a mix of high end to low-end hashtags. What do I mean by high and low caliber hashtags?
There are certain hashtags such as #love or #happy that have millions of posts when you search for them. This means that people are constantly drowning this hashtag and when you use it on your post it will likely get buried under all the new posts and no one will see your post. When you are finding hashtags for your posts you won’t want to be using ones that have over a million posts. These hashtags are tough to rank on and you’ll likely have more success with lower ones. A rough formula that I use is taking 5-10 hashtags in the 500k+ range and 20-25 hashtags in the 5k-500k range until you get your list of 30 total hashtags.
Now another thing to consider is what I quickly mentioned before and that is ranking on hashtags. You will probably have noticed that when you look at a hashtag there is a top posts section. This is where you want to be. But you have to do a little extra work to know if you can rank there. Take a look at the top 9 pictures in the top posts section for the hashtag and calculate their average likes. To rank for that hashtag you have to be able to compete with those numbers meaning if the top posts for a certain hashtag get around 150 likes then your posts need to be getting that as well.
It can be quite time consuming to take into account both the number of posts on a hashtag AND the top posts average likes for ranking. However, I have a solution that solves this problem and helps you find hashtags fast.
The service I use for hashtags is called Flick by Filli Studios. I will drop a link below to where you can try it. They have a ton of video resources explaining in depth how to use their tools, but I will give you a quick rundown on what I use it for and how it could benefit you.
Firstly, they just updated their interface which is really great and easy to work with. Next you can go to the search bar and search a hashtag that you want to find similar hashtags. I’ll use something random like fishing. Before you hit search you’ll see that the software even already has some autofill suggestions which can be handy. Now when you hit search, you’ll see some bubbles pop up on the graph. These are the hashtags that are being recommended to you by the software. If you hover your mouse over the bubbles and look to the top right of the graph you will see some info about each hashtag. It gives you the amount of posts made with the hashtags AND the average likes of the top posts. Perfect right!
But there is still one more feature of this software that takes it a step further and that is the advanced search. So go back to the search and hit the advanced button. Now you can input exactly how many hashtags you want it to recommend, the range for posts made, and the range for average likes. This helps you narrow down the right hashtags for your niche quickly.
Spending some time researching either in the app or with this tool will really help you start crushing your Instagram game. It can be tempting to just use someone else’s hashtags or just keep using the same 30 hashtags on every post. However, if you put in the work, you will start to see more growth and more success for your account.
So go and spend some time working on your hashtag strategy and improve your account today.
